Tatty Devine have drawn from twelve past collections and over a thousand pieces of jewellery to form The Best Of… Tatty Devine, a capsule collection formed in response to customer demand for pieces once seen and never forgotten…
Tatty Devine first became famous for their colourful acrylic pop jewellery. The guitar plectrum and record pieces are central to this collection, along with volume knob brooches and musical note bracelets and earrings. Many of these classics were based on “found” materials, or laser-cut from acrylic.
The laser-cut designs have become more intricate over the years – take a look at the Moon Silhouette brooch, a tiny scene of elfin figures below some trees. Each leaf on the 3cm tall trees seems visible.
There have also been developments into different materials and techniques, including different woods (Swallow brooches, Wooden Wing necklace), enamel (Swallow earrings, Price Ticket pin) and mirror (the fairytale-pretty Horse & Carriage necklace).
There’s an innovative approach to jewellery’s structure .The Trapeze necklace features a girl and boy acrobat linked by a silver coloured ring.
The Horse and Carriage necklace made from mirrored acrylic displays articulated horses and carriage.
Some pieces, like the Dinosaur necklace, reflect the huge ambition behind Tatty Devine. Made from over 50 pieces of acrylic, it’s a t-rex sized task to create! Each bone-shaped piece is individually cut and drilled, and the 50 pieces are then laid out in lines along the workshop bench and threaded to form the necklace.
Other jewellery points to major landmarks in Tatty Devine’s history. The Price Ticket pin was launched at the same time as their Soho shop as part of a range covered in £1.99 price tags (not their real prices, unfortunately…). More landmarks are being built… so until then, enjoy the greatest hits so far!
Tatty Devine is now in its 12th season and is famous for its unique and quirky accessories, which elevate jewellery to art status.
The pair behind it all, Harriet Vine and Rosie Wolfenden, have no formal training as jewellers. They met studying Fine Art at Chelsea School Of Art in 1996 and had planned to become artists until Harriet found some fabric samples on the way home from college one night. She made some leather cuffs, she and Rosie sold them at Portabello and Spitalfields markets, and lo and behold, Tatty Devine was born!
The fledgling label took off as Whistles and Harvey Nichols bought their creations and, following interest from Browns Focus and Vogue magazine, the girls launched their first official collection for Spring Summer 2001 at London Fashion Week. In 2003 they began showing at Paris Fashion Week too, and now have over 100 retail outlets worldwide.
Tatty Devine’s H.Q., workshop and retail outlet opened in London’s fashionable Brick Lane in 2001. A second shop in stylish Soho followed in February 2004. Tatty Devine have forged partnerships with everyone from avant-garde Berlin girl group Chicks on Speed (creating the accessories for their last tour) to designers Basso and Brooke.
The Best Of… collection was launched in Spring 2006 and shall adjust as new favourites are created. Tatty Devine produce two seasonal collections each year.
